In Paraguay, a Spanish Jesuit priest named Alfonso Rodrguez Olmedo was assigned to work among the Guarani people. As a result, he is revered by Catholics as a martyr and a saint. Rodrguez was born on March 10, 1598 in Zamora, Spain. He completed his novitiate in Villagarca de Campos, Valladolid, before being sent to Paraguay for further study. Father Juan de Viana led an expedition out of Lisbon, Portugal, and he was one of the men on board.
