Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
Educator and religious sister Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton is credited with starting the U.S.'s parochial school system. She was the first person born in the United States to be canonized by the Catholic Church after her death (September 14, 1975). First Catholic girls' school in the United States was established at Emmitsburg, Maryland; she also formed the first American congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity.
