Tradition has it that Philomena was a princess from the island of Corfu and travelled to Rome at the age of 13 to meet the emperor Diocletian. The emperor fell in love with her and offered her the throne, but she, having taken a vow of chastity to Christ, refused and he ordered her to be killed. Her canonisation took place on 30 January 1837.
