She was known as the Rose of Lima, a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic in Lima, Peru, for both her life of hard penance and her efforts to help the city's poor. In addition to becoming the patron saint of embroidery and gardening, Saint Rose of Lima was raised in an aristocratic family. She was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized as a saint and a lay member of the Dominican Order.
