According to the Synoptic Gospels, it was St. Simon who was forced by the Romans to carry Jesus of Nazareth's cross to his crucifixion. Rufus and Alexander, two of his students, were raised by him and their father. The inclusion of their names may indicate that they were prominent members of the Early Christian society in Rome.
